The smell of coal brings memories back,
Of orange flames among the black
of lumps of coal stacked in the grate,
Lit from early until late.
A smell that's destined to invoke
Thoughts of the ever-present smoke
That smokeless fuel did much to stop,
Making its levels greatly drop.
Coal fires were very much a part
Of people's lives, right from the start;
They still remind one of the days
When heating meant a cheerful blaze.
