Low Tide

The tide retreats far out to sea
As twice a day the waters flee
Away from the shore, leaving miles of sand
Between low tide and the start of land.
Hundreds of birds appear on cue,
When high tide saw there only a few;
They wander over the sand and mud,
Which very soon again will flood.
Worms and crabs and tiny fish
Make for them a tasty dish
Which they can eat while the tide is out -
That's why there are so many birds about
Until again the sea appears,
As it's done through endless years.
